The Medici family were the masters of Florence during the Renaissance.
They were a family of wealthy bankers who lent to Popes, Kings, and emperors.
In 1480, Lorenzo de Medici (Lorenzo the Magnificent) invited the young Michelangelo to live in the Medici palace to further his studies as an artist.
Each evening they would dine with conversations led by the leading humanist philosopher, Marsilio Ficino, and they'd discuss ideas for how they could create the greatest city state in history.
Ficino's - at the time - revolutionary idea was to sell the people what they want, and give them what they need.
They wanted to teach the masses philosophy and humanist values and knew, in order to do so, they must appeal to existing mass desires.
Art became realistic and filled with beautiful, naked women to attract attention so the message it contained would be shared.
Architecture and city planning was beautiful and purposeful to encourage the rich and the poor to spend time outdoors, together.
Ficino knew that you can't save souls in an empty church. They were willing to use the truth of human nature to further their noble vision.
This idea to sell them what they want, and give them what they need led to an explosion in art, culture, science, maths, history, philosophy and human flourishing that would change the world forever.
Where most other noble visionaries failed, Lorenzo, with Ficino advising him, had the pragmatism of a banker and the practical understanding of a behavioural economist to make his vision a reality.
The truth is, you can use the same information to sell almost anything people want, so long as you tie it to an existing desire. It's up to you whether you give people what they need - or not.
